I read the book to see what sort of mind twisting the “compassionate Christian right” is up to. Nothing new here. If the author had spent as much time trying to to get questioning teenagers and adults to analyse their feelings without attaching shame labels some true good may have been accomplished. Nope.

Two caveats before I begin: 1. I have not completed this book. 2. This may not address the problems that every man with same-sex attractions is dealing with.
Those two points being said, though, this has proven to be a well-written, informal, compassionate book. In regards to what a person who rated this book with one star said: you confuse compassion with condoning. Without pontificating, I will say this seems to be a major problem in the the gay rights movement’s thinking. Furthermore, if you do have serious misgivings with this book or ex-gay ministries in general, please do not use inflammatory words like ‘hate,’ ‘homophobia,”bigotry’and the like; you betray your lack of critical thinking and add no substance to the debate about this issue.
This book exposes that error, even in the author’s forward, where he gives the rationale for the book’s title. Now, I am a first year medical student with little medical training and no background in psychology or sociology, but this seems to take a balanced approach in which you might feel the author is speaking directly to YOU, which is a deflection to the lie that those who struggle with ssa’s are not alone. Thus, if you want compassion and competence (since the author himself struggled with homosexuality and came out of it), I would advise this book.

Pastor Konrad’s book, “You Don’t Have To Be Gay” is one is read initially back in 1989 at Outpost Ministries. It was challenging to me then as I started out my journey out of homosexuality.
Today, I like blessing brothers just starting their journey with copies of “You Don’t Have To Be Gay” as a means to help them along in their journey! I highly recommend it for any man leaving the Gay Lifestyle or for men wanting to help them!

This book consists of real letters sent by the author to a friend struggling with homosexuality. Jeff Konrad, having been delivered from homosexuality, writes encouraging letters of hope and insight to his friend. This book is so easy to read but contains extremely helpful information on finding our real selves in the light of Christ. Quotes a lot from other books that can be helpful including “Homosexuality: A New Christian Ethic” by Elizabeth Moberly, which is also awesome stuff. I highly recommend this book. It helped me a lot on my path to healing.

Whilst I am not a homosexual, this book was an easy read that opened my eyes as to some of the factors that can eventually lead to a person pursuing a homosexual lifestyle. Although it is not an exhaustive book on the causes of homosexuality (and does not claim to be), it highlights relationship paterns that can lead to such behaviour, paterns that can be easily overlooked. It is the only book that I know of that sites numerous references to medical studies proving that nobody is born a homosexual. Finally, it also highlights the spiritual side of homosexuality and how the devil can trap people in this way of life just like he traps people with a drug addiction. True freedom lies in Jesus! Psalm 25.
